Equipping the Believer

BIBLE INTAKE: FOR THE PURPOSE OF GODLINESS

Lesson Outline • Hear • Read • Study • Memorize • Meditate • Apply
Big Idea: We cannot grow spiritually while neglecting the Word of God. The goal of Bible intake is not simply to know more Bible, but to
know God and become more like Christ. Our standing with God is based on Christ's finished work—not our spiritual disciplines—so we
pursue His Word because we have been saved by grace.
1. HEAR GOD'S WORD
Key Texts: Romans 10:17; Luke 11:28; 1 Timothy 4:13
• Faith comes through hearing the Word of Christ. • Gathering with the church matters because God's people gather around His Word. •
Hearing is not passive—the goal is obedience. • Come prepared: pray, pay attention, and ask God for a heart willing to obey.
2. READ GOD'S WORD
Key Texts: Matthew 4:4; 2 Timothy 3:16; Revelation 1:3
• Jesus expected God's people to know what Scripture says: “Have you not read...?” • All Scripture is God-breathed and useful. • Find a
time, make a plan, and be consistent. • Don't read merely to finish chapters—read to know God. • Ask: What does this teach me about
God? What does it reveal about me? What should I do?
3. STUDY GOD'S WORD
Key Texts: Ezra 7:10; Acts 17:11; 2 Timothy 4:13
• Reading gives breadth; study gives depth. • Ezra studied, obeyed, then taught. • The Bereans examined Scripture to test what they
heard. • Start simply: observe the text, write questions, use cross-references, outline paragraphs, and study key words. • Don't settle only
for spiritual food “predigested” by others.
4. MEMORIZE GOD'S WORD
Key Texts: Psalm 119:11; Ephesians 6:17; Matthew 4:1–11
• Store Scripture in your heart so the Holy Spirit can bring truth to mind when you need it. • Jesus answered temptation with “It is written.”
• Scripture memory strengthens faith, helps in witnessing and counseling, provides guidance, and fuels meditation. • Start with one verse;
write it down, review it, memorize it accurately, and use accountability. • The goal is not a verse count—the goal is godliness.
5. MEDITATE ON GOD'S WORD
Key Texts: Joshua 1:8; Psalm 1:1–3; Psalm 119:97–99
• Biblical meditation is not emptying the mind; it is filling the mind with God's truth and thinking deeply about it. • Meditation lets Scripture
“soak in.” • Select a passage; repeat it in different ways; rewrite it in your own words; look for application; pray through the text; don't rush.
• Meditation turns biblical information into insight, passion, and obedient action.
6. APPLY GOD'S WORD
Key Texts: James 1:22–25; John 13:17
• Hearing without doing deceives us. • Understand the passage before applying it; don't take verses out of context. • Expect to discover an
application. Ask: What should I believe? Praise? Thank God for? Pray? Change? Decide? Do? • Leave Bible intake with at least one
specific response—confession, faith, worship, forgiveness, encouragement, obedience, or love.
THE PROCESS Hear → Apply → Obey MORE APPLICATION
Ask yourself: If my growth in godliness were measured by the quality of my Bible intake, what would the result be?
Next Step: What is ONE thing I can do to improve my intake of God's Word this week? Start there. Don't live in guilt over yesterday—press
forward in faith.
Remember: We do not read the Bible to earn God's love. We read because, in Christ, we have received God's grace and want to know
Him. The goal is not merely more Bible knowledge; the goal is a life transformed by the truth of God's Word.
THE PURPOSE
Read → Study Know what God has said.
Memorize → Meditate Let God's truth shape the mind and heart.
Live what God has revealed.
